Successful Taste Tent Launch At Gourock Highland Games

Taste Inverclyde’s launch of its food market ‘Taste Tent’ at Gourock Highland Games has been hailed as a great success by the local traders and visitors.

With the weather supporting a huge turnout on Sunday 13 May 2018, the Taste Tent proved to be a popular addition to the Games which were held at the Battery Park in Greenock.

The 30m x 12m marquee saw the creation of a street food market whilst providing live music, a virtual reality showcase and board games amongst the indoor and outdoor seating.

Local businesses to exhibit included Street vendors Jax Snax (Greenock) and Streetlicious by DJ’s (Port Glasgow) who saw a constant stream of hungry visitors throughout the day.

Superb farm produce was on offer from Argyll based Duntarrin and Shellfield farms whilst West Coast Eats vegetarian and vegan street food proved to be popular additions with locals as did Wemyss Bay’s La Cinquecento Pizza and Pasta.

Local producers Moonbow Bakery (Greenock), A Spoonful of Sugar (Greenock), Betty May’s Fudge (Gourock), Nutcrafter Creamery (Kilmacolm), Kaur Bakers (Renfrewshire) and Foal Craft Soda (Port Glasgow) all sold out of their home-made treats highlighting the interest in local produce.

One Cove Road (Gourock) and Three Sisters Bake (Kilmacolm) alongside social enterprise The Common Grind (Renfrewshire) also saw all of their delicious treats snapped up by the enthused public. Wemyss Bay’s Bay Ices saw great success with their award winning Ice Cream.

Custom House Restaurant used the Taste Tent to promote their recent development of the hotel and long-time supporter of the games – Inverness Fudge (Glasgow) – was also very popular with the younger visitors.

The bar was provided by Raise the Bar (Argyll) and proved to be a big hit with locals looking to enjoy a drink in the sunshine.

Music was also part of the Taste Tent and was a big hit with spectators.  Inverclyde artists included Rod MillerShelagh McKay Jones and Joe McMahon.

Taste Inverclyde was launched in November 2017 by Riverside Inverclyde to promote independent food and drink companies and food tourism throughout the area.

Andrew BowmanHead of Business Investment at Riverside Inverclyde said:

“We were delighted by the interest in the Taste Tent which was supported by a huge turnout at the Gourock Highland Games.  We had planned for 2,000 visitors and probably saw close to double that throughout the day.

“With the spaces subsidised by Riverside Inverclyde, almost all of the food and drink businesses sold out at the event which showed the appetite for further events.  The main aim was to enable local food and drink companies the opportunity to showcase the quality of their offerings which I think we achieved.”

“We’re already being asked about future events and our aim is to provide regular opportunities to promote local food and drink businesses as well as local eateries.  We will now investigate whether we can make this a regular event in Inverclyde for both the public and traders.”

“We’d like to thank all of the visitors for supporting the local businesses and also all of the traders that showed an interest in the Taste Tent.  A big thank you also to all of the suppliers and Inverclyde Council staff that helped to make the event happen.”
