The Custom House And Burns Museum Opens For Doors Open Day

Doors Open Day returns to Inverclyde on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September 2018 with a total of 28 venues, 5 bus tours and 2 walking tours available to the public.

Following the success of last years event, Riverside Inverclyde will once again be opening the historic and newly refurbished Custom House on Greenock’s waterfront for tours of the building and the Robert Burns Museum. Completed in 1818 the Grade A listed building has been transformed into high quality office suites in a comprehensive £5m redevelopment.

The Custom House was designed by architect William Burn in the neoclassical style and in the early part of the 19th century, at a time when Greenock was a thriving principle ‘Port of Entry’ to Scotland and the custom House became a magnificent landmark on the busy River Clyde.

Access to the Greenock Burns Club Room and Exhibition displaying artefacts amassed over the last 216 years. The exhibition comprises of Burns memorabilia and artefacts which includes the history of Greenock Burns Club, the oldest Burns Club in the world and the local connection with Robert Burns and Highland Mary. The collection of books and artefacts are said to be one of the best of its kind and includes literature and poetry by Robert Burns and many other famous authors such as John Gault and William Shakespeare.

Programmes will be available from mid August in Inverclyde libraries, Inverclyde Council's customer service centre and from some of the key venues.

There will be an information handout available to attendees and also a tour provided by the Greenock Burns Club. 

The number of people on each tour is a maximum of 20 per tour and spaces should be booked prior to the day - tours are available every 30 minutes from 10:00 - 16:30.
